Non-Exempt Staff
In accordance with Rensselaer policy and Department of Labor guidelines, non-exempt employees who agree to assist Rensselaer during commencement exercises must be compensated for their time as follows:

Non-exempt staff must receive overtime pay at a rate of time and a half for hours worked beyond 40 in the work week. The schedule of the non-exempt employee may be adjusted for the week so that the total hours worked does not exceed 40; however, if the actual hours worked for the week exceed 40, time and a half must be paid. Overtime pay and schedule adjustments are the obligation of the employee's home department.

Bi-weekly pay period: 5/21/16 - 6/3/16

Scenario 1 (No additional salary budget implication to department):
Employee works 2 hours at commencement on 5/28/16; employee work schedule on the following Thursday, 6/2/16 is reduced by 2 hours so that the total hours for the week equal 40.

Scenario 2 (Budget implication to department requires time and a half to be paid to employee):
Employee works 2 hours at commencement on 5/28/16 and works full schedule for the period 5/21/16 - 6/3/16. Total hours worked in the week equals 42. Budget implication to department requires time and a half to be paid to employee for the 2 hours of overtime worked.

Scenario 3 (No additional salary budget implication to department):
Since commencement is on the first day of the workweek, the only schedule adjustment can be within that week. Therefore, this scenario will not apply this year.
